New Philly Mural Hopes To Raise Bail Money To Free Black Mothers By Mother’s Day

Last Friday, I was invited by the People’s Paper Co-op (PPC) to document the installation of their latest mural aimed at bringing attention to an art-centered fundraising effort to buy the freedom of Black mothers, caregivers, and gender-non-conforming people behind bars in time for Mother’s Day.

Since 2018, the PPC, an art and activism project focused on women in reentry based at The Village of Arts and Humanities, has teamed up with the Philadelphia Community Bail Fund for the annual campaign.

The PPC fellows, a group of formerly incarcerated women, collaborate with artists from across North America to create abolitionist art. All art sales help the Bail Fund #FreeBlackMamas. The PPC’s artwork has raised over $170,000 for the cause in the last three years.
