Designed and painted by lead artist Tai Corrienté Baucom, Philly Votes: Legacy In Bloom is now the first permanent voting-themed mural in Philadelphia! Created with Streets Dept Walls, Mural Arts Philadelphia, and Show Up Strong, the mural sits at the intersection of 57th and Walnut Streets in West Philadelphia on the wall of New Vitae Wellness and Recovery.

The mural was painted the month of October, and finished just ahead of tomorrow’s 2024 Election.

This was also Tai’s first large-scale permanent mural, after creating temporary murals on other Streets Dept Walls and Mural Arts project collaborations: Painting The Party and Remember To Water.

And Tai had help on this one! We had a wonderful and skilled team of assisting artists: Tash Billington, Lami Tolla, Tegan Bellitta, and Ro Adler.

“While creating this piece, I reflected on the themes of foresight and hindsight,” Tai wrote for her artist statement. “I thought of the rights and access to spaces and opportunities that so many people have now as a reward due to the voices and actions of those before us. This sentiment is embodied by the generational trio of women passing the torch of opportunity and responsibility to the next. The figure to the right, a relative, faces the world with courage, while wearing the faces of her ancestors that can be found on her garment. There is also a need to think of the generations that follow, the progress that is yet to be made, and the lives that they deserve to live. The flowers chosen echo these themes: forget-me-nots for remembrance, irises for legacy, and dandelions for hope, reminding us of the impact of planting seeds of change, and spreading a meaningful message, not only to make the best decisions for us now, but for our successors.”
