Hope for a Grays Ferry school shows up in new wheat pastes

GREAT story behind these new pastes in South Philly, sent into me by Huggie…

Basiclly, a friend of Huggie is a teacher at Audenreid high school in Grays Ferry, and as you may or may not know, their has recently been some shaddy shit going down with Arlene Ackerman trying to make it a charter school. Kids and teachers protested, including a teacher named Hope Moffett who got it trouble, and who was literally sent to “teacher jail” for a month.

Crazy story, but I LOVE me some political street art!!

I love this so much! Hopefully Ackerman gets to see this art in person ~ her head would explode and she would probably start a campaign with the tax payer’s money to remove all street art because the threatening messages they portray.

On one hand, I *love* this, and I would love to see Ackerman get fired. But I do think we need to be careful about depicting powerful women of color as demons. It’s a visual metaphor that triggers (consciously or unconsciously) a whole host of racist verbal metaphors in which people of color are described as sub-human (not that I think this was the artist’s intention!).

On the third hand, Paul’s totally right and that would be secretly awesome.

@Anna, I can see where you’re coming from, but this post is about a person abusing their power as a public administrator, not about race. She’s not doing this city, or it’s children, any favors and she needs to be called out on it. even if it means she’s personifying Dracula.
