Occupy Philly Update

Posted photos of the first Occupy Philly rally earlier this month, and since then people have set up camp.

In fact, one of my friends is camping out there on nights and weekends (he works 9-5 Monday through Friday; so it’s not just one type of people camping out there, not that you thought that) and he said I needed to do an update because the amount of people out there supporting the movement is incredible. So, I stopped by early Sunday morning, and if the number of tents are any indication, it would appear the Occupy Philly folks are holding strong. Even after Saturday’s snow.

According to my friend, they plan to stay there all winter, and are currently holding meetings to discuss the best ways to keep people out there, safe and warm, during the colds months.

Are any of you reading this from a tent at City Hall?

Have any of them been able to justify being out there with all the additional cost of police/security etc? That money sure isn’t coming from that 1%. It’s just making my city have less funds to help the people who actually need it and has the police watching over a tent town full of people who are much more privileged than the average Philadelphian instead of having them out patrolling to prevent crime. I don’t think they are lazy or looking for handouts. Theya re the ones who are well enough off to do this for months on end and have no concept of how mucgh they are draining the city and not at all affecting the corporate CEOs and government officials who created all of this.

  Natalie, your not looking at the big picture. Yes it may cost the city money, but so do the Mummers and any other event. But in the long run this will make changes in our society. Just because some one is well off doesn’t mean he doesn’t see the injustices around him. In fact i applaud those who are wealthy and still feel that the average person is getting a raw deal. Whether or not you know this, the same thing happened in the 40’s i believe, a group of employees decided to strike against the department store for better treatment of their employees. The protested. The police came and arrested the protestors. This angered so many people that they in support of the protestors walked off their jobs, bus drivers stopped in the middle of the street to show their protest. After that things changed. When changes are made and everyone is given a chance to work, contribute to society, then we can look back and say it was worth it. If we do nothing we will continue our spiral downward.

It always seems so bleak and sad there when I walk through. Maybe I’ll walk down with some paint and a roll of paper to add to the mix (I bet Blick wouldn’t do that). Something needs to perk those guys up down there. That dry erase board is always being wiped off and the idea wall has been through a couple storms.
