Bumped into an Occupy Philly rally at Independence Hall this weekend on my walk around in search of new street art, and I couldn’t help but to take note of the incredible police presence at an incredibly peacefully rally. Really, it looked like they were getting ready for the Philles to win the World Series again, or something.
Someone told me last week about how the city’s claiming they’ve already spent over 1.5 million dollars “handling” the Occupy Philly people, and at the time I just rolled my eyes and said, “Show me a receipt! The mayor could fart and the city would spend 60K on scented candles.” (Or something like that.) But after seeing probably at least 100 cops just leaning on poles and joking around with each other on Saturday – ALL of whom are probably getting paid overtime – I don’t find it so hard to believe anymore.
Seems like some of these guys could be busy ticketing some cars parked illegally in the bikes lanes, no? (I realize that’s a different agency, but you know what I’m saying.)
