Steve Powers New Fishtown Mural: Homage or Ad?

Interesting little debate I’ve seen taking place in the comments of at least a few people’s photos posted on Facebook/Twitter/Instagram of this new Steve Powers (aka ESPO, aka the Love Letters artist) mural that’s currently being painted on Front street in Fishtown, right across the street from the El Bar. The debate: Is this mural an homage or an ad?

Seems to me like it shouldn’t matter too much. I mean, artists supporting artists is what it’s all about, right? And that sort of comradery is what I, and I think a lot of other Philadelphians, really appreciate about our arts scene nowadays. But nevertheless it is an interesting question. And I suppose if I were apart of another well-known band from the area I might ask, well where’s my mural then?!

All that said, I can’t find much info on this new mural. Perhaps it’s apart of a new series of murals he’s doing to commemorate Philly musicians? Or maybe this is just the side of his friend’s house? I’m not quite sure, but it’s nice to see ESPO in Fishtown either way.

Thoughts?

    It’s sort of a 3 way collaboration between Steve, Kurt, and the owner of the building who’s a fan of both Steve and Kurt. The owner is currently turning the building into a bar. Stay tuned….

      I don’t live or work in Fishtown these days, but if you’re still painting after 8pm, or on the weekends, I’d love to come down and chat.

      As far as this post, however, I was just highlighting a question I saw a number of people ask/comment about your new mural across social media… Don’t shoot the messenger.
