Philly’s Own Leaning Tower of Pisa

Currently my most liked Instagram – ever – I wonder, why does everyone love this Leaning Tower of Pisa parking pole so much? And more importantly, how can Philly do more stuff like it?

The mini-mural, which has sat on 5th street (just north of South street) for nearly a decade now, is far from anything new, yet it still surprises and delights Philadelphians to this day… Just look at the comments on my Instagram, if you have any doubts about that.

It all leaves me wondering, what other things exist in Philly’s public spaces that we could artistically enhanced like this? Any ideas?

It’s been there much longer than a decade. I first remember seeing it in 1997 or early 1998, right when George’s 5th Street Cafe was opening on that corner. It already looked somewhat old and weathered then. (In fact, I am nearly certain that somebody has touched up that paint job since I was last shooting this object.)

  It’s definitely been touched up. It used to have a pink color to it because it was so faded. I remember seeing it back in 94 or 95. I would love to find out who the artist was.

This is my favorite piece of street art in Philadelphia. I remember seeing this gem about 15-20 years ago when I used to frequent a skateboard shop that used to be on 5th, (SubZero now called Nocturnal). Thanks for sharing. :)
