Lisa Kelley Installs for #RevolutionaryArt at Arch Street Meeting House
Artwork by: Lisa Kelley
Title of Artwork: Epidemic
Location: Arch Street Meeting House
Artist Statement:
I am inspired by experiences that impact me emotionally. I developed my current body of work because of a need to tell a story, and to help others find their voice. I am interested in exploring the stigma and shame surrounding addiction, telling the stories of hope, loss and love and connecting those affected.
I engage the community by having individuals affected by addiction write on strips of fabric – messages of love, loss, memories, inspiration. We gather in groups to tell our stories, to share our trials and our breakthroughs. I take these written messages, knot and weave them together, creating woven panels that connect our stories. I have gravitated toward textiles and weaving because of the physical and meditative nature of creating the work.

Revolutionary: A Pop-Up Street Art Exhibition is a six-week exhibit of 13 contemporary Philly-based artists installed at 13 locations across Philadelphia’s Historic District. Exploring the spirit of revolution, the artists chosen for #RevolutionaryArt are looking at the world around us with a critical eye and creating works of art that challenge the political and social status quo. Commissioned by Visit Philly and curated by StreetsDept.com’s Conrad Benner, more on the exhibition – including a map of all the installations – can be found here!
