Artist Symone Salib Celebrates Queer Love with New Valentine’s Day Street Art Series

Absolutely in love with this new series of wheatpastes installed today by Philly-based artist, Symone Salib! The series celebrates LGBTQ+ love in our public space, where unfortunately there’s still relatively few works of public art or murals that do so. I followed Symone and her friend/artist assistant Sammy Kovnat as they installed wheatpaste tributes to a number of real life loving couples on walls around Philly.

“That’s Gay is a Valentine’s Day street art series celebrating queer love in the most wholesome way,” Symone texted me. “The title is a play on the hurtful language that so many of us heard in our youth. It’s explores diversified forms of intimacy in queer relationships. It speaks to the simple moments of love that often are not displayed in the public space. It’s about how transformative the quiet moments of love can be.”

The artworks photographed for this post can be found at the following locations, in order of their appearance:
- 11th and Spring Garden Streets
- 13th and Locust Streets
- Broad and South Streets
- 22nd and Lombard Streets
- Juniper and South Streets
- Pine and Broad Streets
