Abandoned in The Poconos

Stumbled on this massive, MASSIVE resort in the Pocono Mountains over the weekend, which seems to have been left completely abandoned. Tons of rooms, dozens of private cabins, a few tennis and basketball courts, two swimming pools, and an ice skating rink. The size of the abandoned property was awe-inspiring. Must have been really impressive in its heyday.

It makes me wonder: Was this resort in particular just poorly managed, or do people just not go to the Poconos as much as they used to? Judging by the fact that there are plenty more abandoned Pocono resorts, it’s probably the latter. But I wonder why?

    wow! is this mount airy lodge? i remember the jingle from the 80s — as kids we thought it would be an amazing place with heart shaped pools (we thought). such a sad story. amazing photos!

    how do u “stumble” upon something that large? Stumbling implies you didn’t know it was there, and just found it by accident. U don’t know enough urbexers who have already been there to know that this awesome place exists?

    We drive past this every time we go to our place in Canadendis. It was known as Penn Hills Resort, and was in business until about 6-7 years ago, but had been going downhill for many years. Nowadays folks don’t want to go to the Poconos for a romantic getaway when they can take a cheap flight to a resort at some place like Cancun. It was up for auction sale some years ago but found no takers. The owner also had the golf course and a small ski area nearby, both of which are also closed I think.

      WRONG RESORT!?!?? This is Penn Hills, NOT Mt. Airy Lodge!? I worked there when things started to go downhill… Between the changes in the way ppl vacation, and the fact that a lot of the NY and NJ vacationers decided to move here permanently, causing property and school taxes to sky rocket-EVERYTHING for everyone involved changed! Most of our family run resorts have closed their doors… We are no longer the “Vacation Location”… Bc they all live here now! It was once an amazing place! As was Pocono Gardens, Brookdale, Stricklands, Mt. Airy, Mtn. Manor, Pocmont, Pine Ridge, Crescent Lodge, Birchwood, and my favorite, Buck Hill Inn!! And those are just the ones I can think of at this moment, and they have All closed their doors – PERMANENTLY! So Very Sad ….. The Poconos has forever changed.

    I used to go here for several of years with my family when I was younger. My memory remembers a map of the location. It was beautiful and there was something to do for every age. I hate to read this and to find out that now it’s a casino.

    We stayed there for our honeymoon in November 1977…. had been at Paradise Stream for the heart shaped tubs, then over to Mt Airy for more activities, such as the ice skating rink… dance lessons, etc… had a wonderful time there!

    That was the original Mt Airy lodge – not the new lodge and casino location; this was the original honeymoon suite and resort place. I mean they had a casino, but nothing like what’s at the other location now. Remember those hokey commercials in the 80s? They aired coast-to-coast and in Canada. It was a pretty big deal for 50/60yrs. Then it just closed and they left EVETYTHING. Pretty sure that was around 2000. I believe another company came in and tried to do something with it for a season, but no dice.

      This must have been the one that we went to… in ‘77… seemed very family oriented…rather than just romantic couples…. just remember the large indoor ice rink, eating with other people in the dining room, and the game machines there….
