Streets Dept Podcast – SN 2, EP 11: Writing Your Own Story, A Talk with Director and Curator Maori Karmael Holmes

April 24, 2019

Y’all I am so excited to welcome today’s podcast guest, Maori Karmael Holmes!

Maori was literally (in the true meaning of the word) the first person I emailed to ask if she wanted to be interviewed on this season of the Streets Dept Podcast. A world-renowned curator, organizer, and director, Maori is probably best known as the founder of BlackStar Film Festival, an annual celebration of the visual and storytelling traditions of the African diaspora and of global communities. I’ve been following Maori’s work and success for years now, and today we talk about about the importance of film to the human experience, representation vs. authorship, what she’s working on next, and so much more!

Check out my conversation with Maori Karmael Holmes below, or on any major podcast streaming platform by searching “Streets Dept Podcast”!

Be sure to subscribe to the Streets Dept Podcast on Apple Podcasts/ iTunesSpotify, Google PlayStitcher, or any major podcast streaming platform to receive new episodes as soon as they’re published, and please feel free to rate and write a review of the podcast on those platforms to help others find it. (Truly, rating and reviewing podcasts, particularly on Apple Podcasts, helps us so SO much, so thank you for doing that.)

Season 2 of the Streets Dept Podcast is brought to you by our brilliant sponsors at Temple University! Each episode is mixed and edited by our Producer Mike Mehalick and recorded at the legendary Indy Hall coworking space in Old City, Philadelphia.
