I mean, truly: where is the lie?

A new sign installation from artist Thomas Buildmore located at Cecil B. Moore avenue and Front street in Fishtown proclaims: “‘Street Art,’ it’s really more about the internet!!”

And really that idea can be carried through to pretty much everything these days from the art world’s paid pop-up art experiences and museums all over the globe leaning into building Instragrammable exhibitions to how social media has changed politics to literally how the No. 1 song in the United States right now is successful because of its online virality.

For better or worse, it’s ALL about the internet now. And those who understand that seem to be killing it in their practices and industries. It makes a lot of sense too; never in the history of humanity have you ever been able to reach so many people so quickly. So if your goal is to reach a mass audience, then creating something that will spark interest on the internet is a way to go.
