Streets Dept Podcast – SN 3, EP 5: Antoinette Cauley and Building Your Vision As An Artist

December 24, 2019

Welcome back to the Streets Dept Podcast, y’all! This season of the podcast is our first-ever road trip season! That means that while the episodes at the beginning and end of this season will be recoded here in Philadelphia at Radio Kismet where I’m based, the middle of this season (seven episodes total) was recorded on a recent road trip from Phoenix, Arizona to Denver, Colorado talking with some of the creative minds from those states.

In today’s episode, we’ll be talking with Antoinette Cauley! A Phoenix native, Antoinette was named the 2017 and 2018 Arizona Foothills Magazine’s Best Local Artist, as well as one of 48 most influential people in the state of Arizona in 2019 by Phoenix Magazine. Antoinette’s current paintings and portraiture work reflect her city, particularly its grit and beauty, as well as the people of her city and community.

Art began and remains therapeutic for Antoinette. She began drawing and painting at a young age to explore social issues surrounding herself as well as her own internal identity conflicts as a young black woman. Her work is heavily influenced by rap music and hip hop culture. She combines her love of rap and a lifelong connection to rap icons with her interests in vibrant color and portraiture. She explores innocence lost and gender roles through her emotionally driven paintings. Antoinette has spent the past several years working as a full time artist in Phoenix. And I personally was so taken by her drive and confidence. It’s truly infectious when you talk with her.
