Pussy Division Reminds Philly That Harassment Isn’t Okay
Spotted the above ‘Smile Honey’ and ‘Hey Sexy’ anti-harassment stencils at 9th and Bainbridge streets and 9th street and Washington avenue, respectively. Created by Pussy Division, the group behind the ‘Stop Rape’ stickers.
If you didn’t know about the group before, according to their Facebook page: “Pussy Division is a group of Philadelphia feminist activists that are speaking out. Through guerilla activism and online outreach, we want to promote awareness and generate discussions around issues related to oppression and inequality. Pussy Division is especially interested in issues related to rape, abuse, sexism, misogyny, racism, trans discrimination and other forms of oppression. We use social media and guerilla marketing to bring attention to these issues.”
Not the first time women have taken up the issue of harassment on the streets of Philadelphia. In the summer/fall of 2011, there was the Project GASTRIC series of wheatpastes, then this series of wheatpastes in October of 2012.
No matter what you think of how these women are getting the message out there the point remains, harassment on the street continues – and has continued for years – to be an issue that sadly needs our attention.
